Twilight's Nightmare by Ratamahatta7 Twilight's Nightmare by Ratamahatta7
Yay! Back from England!
Finally my take on the whole alicorn-Twilight thing. Maybe I read too much into it, but I think it is quite macabre if you think that Twilight could live forever, and thus would have to witness the deaths of her friends. I haven't seen the season finale yet, so, sorry if I misunderstood something :P
Still, this one was a lot of fun to make. I am finally getting somewhere with coloring and shading, in spite of the shadows still being there not for logical reasons, but just because I thought they looked pretty ^^

It is not confirmed that alicorns are immortal. But either way, the good thing about it all is that even if the other Mane girls don't have it in their destiny to become alicorns, there are still things like age spells and Celestia knows what else. Besides, it were the Elements that ultimately ushered in the alicorn thing.
My long-standing personal theory is that the Elements made Celestia and Luna immortal (and are the reason why Cadence doesn't appear to be, not right now at least), which would mean that the Mane girls would share in the Element-bestowed immortality as well.

As for the picture itself, the super-long hair certainly adds to the expressiveness. Good take on the coloured stripes here, too. The attempts at highlighting are simplistic, but it's better to have some than not to have any. Those great feathers on the wings are rather beautifully shaded, and the size of the wings fits the changed size of her anthropomorphic body. Speaking of the body, it's shaped rather well. And her face is very expressive, particularly the eyes, good job there. Overall, well done!

Twilight, my Princess, my love, do not worry. I promise to you that you will never, ever be alone. There are many ways by which we can all stay together forever, and I, personally, know that no matter what, we shall not be apart. I will never abandon you, my beloved. No matter how long you will live in this world, I will be there. I will be with you always. Never forget that. Now stand up, Twily, and wipe those tears, or I'll wipe them for you. We are all here, and we are all alive and together. Let's remember what you yourself taught me: stop worrying needlessly about the future and live our lives to the fullest. Let us go out there with our friends and do exactly that. I won't stand for seeing you this sad, not even once in an eternity.

That point... Kind lightens the mood. Too bad that the fandom is torn in half...

If a vocal minority is considered a "half", then perhaps. Otherwise, it's simply a small bunch of dissenters and the rest with a variety of neutral and accepting attitudes.

Well... The fandom is changing, there are groups and guys who do hate the change. With the new stuff on the way, things might get... Well... controversial... I best be hunker in my bunker when the flame wars start. (I'm just worried for the fandom and the series, but since you know your stuff about Twilight's position, it's not going to be doom and gloom.)

The fandom is not a dead thing, it's alive and thus constantly changing and reshaping itself, more actively than it is apparent to the naked eye. It's changed far, far more between S2 and S3 than it has after the S3 finale.
The flame wars have long since started, and most of them have died off. If worried about Twilight and alicornhood, I think it's best to emerge from bunkers now. There's a new flame-rich topic now, EQG, but I don't see anything different with it. The same doomsayers, the same sensationalists—and the same sensible people. If anything, the Twilicorn fracas has fostered a greater resilience and stability, if these results are any evidence.
But ultimately, there is no need to be worried. Heed Twilight's experience in It's About Time and let the future handle itself. Instead, enjoy the glory that you partake in right now.

Cryptic, but I guess you have your reasons.

"It is not confirmed that alicorns are immortal"

But Celestia is over a 1000 years old. :O

But does Celestia equal every alicorn ever? Not at all. Case in point: Cadance.

Allegorically: if you knew of a single cat over the course of your life, and it was a tabby cat, then you're likely to assume that all cats are tabby and of the same size and habits etcetera. But obviously, that isn't the case. That's the "insufficient reference pool" you may have heard someone talk about.
